Case Study: A training program on emotional intelligence in managers
Background: XYZ Corporation is a retail company with 1000+ employees. The company’s management team recognized that emotional intelligence (EI) was a key factor in the success of their managers, as it allowed them to effectively lead and communicate with their teams, navigate conflicts, and make better decisions. Therefore, they decided to implement a training program on EI for all of their managers.
Methodology: The training program was designed and delivered by a team of certified EI trainers and executive coaches. The program consisted of two full-day workshops, held two weeks apart, as well as four online modules that were completed by the managers between the workshops. The content of the program focused on self-awareness, empathy, emotional regulation, and effective communication. The program also included a coaching component, where each manager was teamed with 4 coaches who provided support and guidance throughout the program.
Implementation: The program was rolled out to all of the managers in the organization, with the first group of managers beginning the program in August 2022. The program was implemented over a period of four months, with new groups of managers starting the program every month. The organization faced some challenges in terms of scheduling the workshops and the coaching sessions, as well as ensuring that the managers completed the online modules. However, the trainers and coaches were able to work with the managers to overcome these challenges.
Evaluation: To evaluate the effectiveness of the training program, the organization conducted pre- and post-training assessments of the managers’ EI scores, as well as surveys of the managers and their teams. The results showed that the managers’ EI scores improved significantly after completing the program, with an average increase of 15%. The managers reported that they felt more confident in their ability to lead and communicate with their teams, and the teams reported that they noticed a positive change in the managers’ behavior.
Conclusion: The training program on EI was a success for XYZ Corporation. The managers’ EI scores improved significantly, and the managers and their teams reported positive changes in behavior and communication. The program helped the managers to be more effective leaders and better able to navigate conflicts and make better decisions. Based on the success of the program, XYZ Corporation plans to make it a regular part of their management development program. The results indicate that investing in EI training can have a positive impact on the effectiveness of managers and the performance of the organization as a whole.
